Unrealistic cosmetic operation expectations

A recent report by the Medical Defence Union insurance group states that dissatisfactory results from cosmetic surgery is the major cause of successful compensation claims.

Christine Tomkins, MDU chief executive stated that the key issue causing the amount of claims is a lack of communication:

"Only a small number of claims arise from poor surgical technique.

"We know from this analysis that some patients have unrealistic expectations of what can be achieved by cosmetic procedures and what risks are involved in the procedure."

She stressed the importance of a surgeon advising patients about the risks and benefits of surgery, including possible complication rates and alternative treatment methods available to them.

The president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, Adam Searle, has said that expectations of cosmetic surgery have become unrealistic in recent years:

"Part of the doctor’s duty is to explore with the patient what expectations they have and what the limits are."

If you or a family member is considering plastic surgery, always ensure that you meet with the surgeon and fully understand exactly what your surgery will entail, and what the possible risks are.
