Midwife mistake with new baby
A young mother was handed her newborn baby for the first time, and advised that she had a healthy baby boy. It wasn’t until later that day as the baby was taken for a bath, that the newly named ‘Ryan’ was discovered to be a girl.
Fearing that there had been a mix up and their baby had been switched, the mother and her partner nervously awaited the results of a DNA test, which was to take 5 weeks. During this time they were scared to bond with the baby in case she turned out not to be theirs.
The results proved that the girl was their child. The hospital where the mistake occurred, the Furness General Hospital, have apologised and advised that an inquiry into how such a mistake could be made, is to be carried out.
