Medical negligence | Hepatitis C

It has emerged that over 2,000 women may have contracted hepatitis C from a gynaecologist suffering from the virus.

At risk patients from hospitals across England and two health boards in Scotland have been notified by letter. They have been asked to have a blood test to ensure that they are safe.

The doctor in question who was unaware that he or she had the virus worked in several hospitals in obstetrics and gynaecology. He or she was immediately transferred to a healthcare area where patients were not at risk.

Hepatitis C does not often reveal symptoms, however the virus can cause abdominal pain and jaundice and lead to chronic liver disease. In some cases it can be the cause of liver cancer.
